Speaker Biographies
Koye Akoni
Koye is Barrister of the Courts of England and Wales who has a general commercial practice
that covers a wide range of areas, including international trade, energy, shipping and aviation.
He regularly appears as sole and junior counsel in international arbitrations and in the English
High Court, and has also appeared in the Court of Appeal and Privy Council. He has appeared
in countless LMAA arbitrations in the context of dry shipping disputes as well as disputes
offshore oil and gas disputes. Prior to joining the Bar, Koye served as the Judicial Assistant to
the then Chancellor of the High Court, Sir Terence Etherton, for two terms in 2014, and has
been a Visiting Tutor at King’s College London where he taught Contract Law, and the Law of
Trusts and Equitable Remedies. He graduated with a first-class degree in law from King’s
College London and a distinction in the BCL from the University of Oxford.
Melek Başak Aldı
Melek Başak Aldı graduated from Istanbul Kültür University in 2019 and completed an LL.M.
in Business Law at Istanbul Bilgi University in February 2024. She qualified as a Solicitor of
England and Wales in May 2025, enhancing her international practice. Başak focuses on ship
finance, ship sale and purchase, shipping and admiralty matters, and commercial dispute
resolution, with additional experience in the real estate and transportation sectors. She advises
shipowners, shipyards, agencies, banks, P&I Clubs, and freight forwarders on complex finance
and refinance transactions, ship registry matters, and asset enforcement, including vessel
arrests, restructuring, and settlement proceedings. She also assists leading shipyards with
shipbuilding and conversion contracts and the resolution of technical disputes, and handles
litigation and arbitration relating to loan and mortgage agreements, cargo and crew claims, and
international trade disputes.
Mehmet Raci Alper
Raci is a partner of leading shipping and insurance experts Ersoy Bilgehan Lawyers &
Consultants based in Istanbul. He specializes in various legal matters related to the shipping
and insurance sectors including contracts of carriage, marine insurance and a wide array of
disputes arising out of casualties such as collisions, groundings, salvage, crew injury/death,
cargo damage/loss and pollution.
His transport related work also covers carriage by road where he advises and represents clients
ranging from hauliers, freight forwarders and various types of logistics service provides and
their insurers to warehouse operators and terminals on complex disputes involving CMR,
contracts of carriage, multimodal transport, cargo casualty, theft and customs matters.On
several occasions he has issued specialist legal opinions, witness statements and affidavits in
court and arbitral proceedings held in various jurisdictions on legal questions concerning
Turkish transport and insurance law.
Ceren Çakır
Ceren is a founding partner at ECC, specializing in international arbitration and complex
commercial disputes, with a particular focus on financial and maritime matters. She also advises
on banking and finance, corporate matters, and shipping transactions, including ship and yacht
sale and purchase.
She represents local and international clients across all stages of disputes before courts and in
arbitration proceedings under ICC, ISTAC, LCIA, LMAA, SCC, DIA, GAFTA, FOSFA, and
ad hoc rules, and sits as an arbitrator.
She is actively involved in the international legal community, serving as an Officer of the IBA
Maritime and Transport Law Committee and as Regional Representative for the Black Sea, and
previously served as ICC YAF Representative for Türkiye. She works in Turkish, English, and
French.
Ceren has been sailing since a young age, bringing a practical dimension to her work in
maritime law.
Prof. Dr. Yusuf Çalışkan
Prof. Dr. Yusuf Çalışkan is a full professor of Private International Law at Istanbul Medeniyet
University School of Law where he teaches Private International Law, International Investment
Law, International Investment Arbitration, and International Commercial Arbitration.
Furthermore, Prof Çalışkan was elected as a member of the Governing Council of the Institute
for the Unification of Private International Law (UNIDROIT) for the term 2019-2023, and
2023-2028. Prof. Çalışkan has authored numerous publications in private international law,
investment law, and related fields. Throughout his distinguished career, he has acted as
arbitrator, counsel, and legal expert in a wide range of international and domestic disputes,
providing expert opinions and representing parties before arbitral tribunals and courts.
Prof. Dr. Ceyda Süral Efeçınar
Prof. Dr. Ceyda Süral Efeçınar has finished her LLB in Dokuz Eylül University and LLM in
Stockholm University. She obtained her PhD degree from Dokuz Eylül University on private
law. She has worked as a research assistant at Dokul Eylül University Faculty of Law. Between
2009-2021, she worked as the head of the department of private international law at Kadir Has
University Faculty of Law. Since 2022, she is a full professor at Piri Reis University, which is
a specialized university in the maritime sector. She has published four books; Nautical Berthing
Contracts in Private International Law; The Limited Immunity of Foreign States from
Jurisdiction and Execution in Private International Law; UNIDROIT Principles as Applicable
Law to International Commercial Contracts; and The Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign
Judgments within the European Union. She has a number of articles in the fields of private
international law, international litigation, international arbitration, sea tourism, law of
foreigners and international commercial law. Prof. Dr. Süral Efeçınar is lecturing on private
international law, international trade law and international commercial arbitration law at Piri
Reis University. She is also a lecturer at Salzburg University European Private Law Summer
School and she has given lectures on international litigation at Bilkent University; Coimbra
University and Coventry University.
Prof. Dr. Cemile Demir Gökyayla
Prof. Gökyayla has served as counsel and arbitrator in numerous ad hoc and institutional
international arbitration proceedings conducted under UNCITRAL, ICC, DIAC, ICSID,
TOBB, and ITOTAM rules, involving the laws of various jurisdictions. She also represents
parties before Turkish courts in matters concerning the enforcement and recognition of foreign
arbitral awards and court judgments.
She previously served as a member of the Istanbul Arbitration Centre’s National Court and
Advisory Committee, contributing to the drafting of the Centre’s Arbitration Rules. She also
took part in the subcommittee responsible for reviewing the provisions on domestic arbitration
in the Turkish Civil Code. Prof. Gökyayla is a member of the ICC Commission on Arbitration
and ADR as well as the National Committee. She currently serves as the Dean of the Faculty
of Law at Istanbul Kultur University.
She frequently speaks and moderates at international arbitration conferences and is the author
of several books and articles in the field of private international law.
Dr Doğan Gültutan
Doğan is a practicing academic dual-qualified in England & Wales and Türkiye. He is a partner
and solicitor-advocate at Greymore and Senior Lecturer at the City Law School. He advises
clients on dispute resolution matters, focusing primarily on international commercial and
investment arbitration, and commercial litigation. He has represented multinational
corporations and sovereign states in high-stakes commercial and investor-state arbitrations and
litigation proceedings. Doğan also serves and accepts appointments as arbitrator, having been
listed on the lists of arbitration of arbitral institutions such as DIAC, HKIAC, TIAC,
arbitrateAD and LMAA. He frequently publishes on contract law, arbitration and commercial
dispute resolution.
Ruth Hosking
Ruth is a commercial litigation and arbitration specialist, with particular expertise in shipping,
civil fraud private international law and commodities. She works both as sole counsel and
junior, and also accepts appointments as an arbitrator.
She has appeared in the House of Lords, Court of Appeal and High Court, and in major
international arbitrations (including ICC, LCIA, LMAA, GAFTA and FOSFA). She has been
involved in a number of high profile cases, including "The Achilleas", a leading case on the
contractual principles of remoteness of damage and "The Atlantik Confidence", the first case in
which an English Court has determined that a person was barred from relying on the limits
provided by the Limitation Convention.
Ranked as a Leading Junior by Chambers UK and the Legal 500, she was named Shipping
Junior of the Year at the 2022 Chambers UK Bar Awards.
Prof. Dr. Zeynep Derya Tarman
Prof. Dr. Zeynep Derya Tarman is a full professor and the Dean of Koç University Law School,
She obtained a doctoral degree in law from the University of Konstanz School of Law in 2007.
She joined Koç University as an assistant professor, was promoted to associate professor and
promoted to a full professor in 2019. She has been appointed as the Dean of Koç University
Law School in September 2024. She has held guest professorship positions in various
universities She has conducted research at various institutions as a visiting academic amongst
which are Harvard Law School, Max Planck Institutes in Luxembourg and Munich.
Prof. Tarman’s areas of research and specialization include international private law,
international commercial arbitration, foreign investment law, law of foreigners, refugee law and
business and human rights. She has authored numerous research articles, book chapters and
books in the said fields. She is teaching at undergraduate and post-graduate level while advising
doctoral and master’s students in international private law.
